Ways Of Making Beaded Lamp Shades

January 8th, 2012 by Peter Bachman

Beaded lamp shades are a widespread style for glass light shades due to the simple fact that it is one of the limited number of decorations one is able to add to the surface of the home accessory. Whereas fabric can be sewn with thread and needle to attach other pieces of fabric or decorative materials, hard surfaces are not so amenable in the same way.

Two major choices are left for people interested in decorating their lighting. First, one can use glue or cement to stick pieces of trim and beading to the outer surface. For proper placement, one can use a pencil or crayon to mark the areas where the bead and trim is supposed to go. This process results in beaded shades.

The alternative to beading is to paint the glass surface but this requires a lot of skill with paint. More than a single coat may be required, and even multiple coats may not look pleasing after the paint dries. Dried paint has different optical qualities from wet paint. Again, use pencil to mark out the shapes prior to painting on either inner or outer surface.

Stained shades have a long history in the style widely known as Tiffany. The creator, Louis Comfort Tiffany, was a man of the early 20th century, forging novel art and improving the field of interior design. There are two main reasons why Tiffany indulged in these products. The first is that he had classical training in the arts and understood the construction of stained glass windows in churches. The second is that he was by trade also an interior designer who thought up novel home decor ideas. Many years later his early works are still sought after, but many need serious restoration.

A good shape for amateurs wanting to decorate their own lighting is the torchiere. Torchieres are versatile as they can be moved to different locations as need be in the house. The tall lamp projects illumination upward, casting a soft glow on everything. The lamp itself frequently shaped like a wide conical shape opening skyward to cast the bulb across a wide area, resulting in the fact that the illumination is diffused evenly all over the area. Torchieres may be obtained in a number of tones and sizes. Measure the width on top for the size and also on the bottom of the fitter.

Amateurs who wish to move on to more difficult projects can try two other styles. The hurricane style is characterized by a very special profile, taller than wide, which reminds one of a vase. It fits well for rooms with very tall ceilings that is completed by the tallness of the hurricane. An additional unusual style is the traditional gas lamp shade that became popularized in the age of Queen Victoria. This age saw the coming-to-age of gas power and therefore a increase in usage and production.

Constructing an Outdoor Fireplace or Fire Pit in Your Backyard

December 5th, 2010 by Hubert Miles

The backyard is considered an extension of your home. It serves as a space for entertaining family and friends. An outdoor fireplace or fire pit creates an inviting gathering location for a relaxing evening. Many outdoor fireplaces can be included as part of a covered or screened porch, while fire pits work well for patios, swimming pools, or near a lake.

When looking to design an outdoor fireplace or fire pit, consider what you will be using the area for. Will you be entertaining friends and family or seeking a more intimate seeking for you and your spouse?

Be sure that when designing your fire pit that you make it large enough so that all your guests can gather around without feeling cramped. Layout the area with the chairs to verify the size before you begin digging the footers.

You can design your space for a more intimate setting with over-sized outdoor couches and chairs that will allow for you and the one you love to lay back relax while enjoying a quiet evening and a bottle of wine.

There is not much of a difference in indoor and outdoor fireplaces. The main distance is the height of the chimney. As long as the chimney is high enough to provide a strong draw you will be fine. This is likely a job for a professional, but there are kits that can be purchased that coupled with some carpentry skills can be done by a do it yourselfer.

Fire pits are generally constructed with fire rated brick masonry attached to concrete blocks and attached to a steel reinforced concrete footer. Fire rated bricks are also laid on even ground with a sand base. To allow for easy cleanup, you can also have a drain line installed to wash away ash residue. You can also install a gas fuel line to make starting and maintaining the fire easier.

There are also many great choices in portable fire pits which are of metal. When using these systems, be sure the fire pit is resting on a non flammable surface like a brick paver or concrete patio and not situated directly under roof overhangs.

Final Remarks

Regardless if you build an outdoor fire pit or fireplace, you can be sure that the addition will provide many years of enjoyment for you and your family in all seasons.

Messy Closets Ideas For Kids

January 11th, 2010 by Sue Packard

Most children hate cleaning their room and have closets that are a disaster. The closet becomes a place to throw clothes for these kids, rather than a place to store things. Any parent who wants to teach their children about taking care of things and keeping their room neat has a big challenge ahead of them.

Children usually dont care about their closets and if they had one that was interesting to them, they might show a desire to keep it cleaner. Kids love sports teams, famous athletes, movies, as well as movie stars and these can be used to make a themed closet for your child. If you design a closet around their favorite sports team or player, they will take much more interest in the closet and undoubtedly learn to use it.

You might also try some colorful lighting in your childs closet. Children love lights and the right kind of lights can enhance any room as well as any closet. If you take a look at all the trendy restaurants and nightclubs, you will see that much of the atmosphere that is created is done through lighting. Putting in some interesting lights in your childs closet will get their attention and make them want to open it. The right kind of fun lights will help your child become interested in their closet.

A walk in closet in your kids room will give you even more options to make it into a fun area for them to put their things. A custom closet can be built if you have the money by one of the many closet companies that are in the market now. If you have them design something that is unique and exciting for your child, you will find they might suddenly like spending time putting away their things and keeping the closet clean. This will help them learn to respect their possessions and take pride in what they own.

Some children are naturally neat and others will always slobs when it comes to neatness. Most kids though, fall somewhere in between the two extremes and these are the kids that can be taught to respect their things and to take care of them. By making a closet that is a bit out of the ordinary, you will be adding a tool you can use to teach you child about picking up after themselves and putting things away where they belong.

Want to Go Shabby Chic in the Bedroom? Princesses of All Ages Will like This Idea

April 12th, 2009 by Alysha Miller

The little girls of today have Disney in mind, and Barbie as a Princess. So a lot of little girls want bedrooms that make them feel like princesses or Cinderella, too. However, even though there are generic princess themed designs you can choose from, shabby chic can give both big and little girls a romantic, clean uncluttered look in their bedrooms. Yes, adult women as well can start with the princess theme and expand on it with a shabby chic dresser, chair or desk in the home office or bedroom that will give them a place of refuge and serenity to come home to.

The term shabby chic, refers to a style of interior design that is functional and comfortable. White furniture is usually the trademark of the Shabby Chic design. Often quality antique and gently used furniture is painted country white to create a fashionable, clean and functional look. A Shabby Chic dresser or bed does not reflect just one look. It is often combined with Victorian, Country and Romantic styling. As well as with vintage furniture and even vintage laces to give a perfect mix of lived in comfort. The Shabby Chic furniture line, also offers authentic workmanship and quality wooden white furniture at affordable prices and stylish designs.

The main purpose of shabby chic is to create a “clean” line and feel in the room, for an uncluttered, pristine look. Decide on what you want for furniture elements, including your shabby chic dresser, before you decide on what you want to decorate for your princess. This may help you design a room that has more open space so that your little girl can sleep and play in comfort and serenity.

Expand on this for adults by adding a small secretary mirror to the decor. These mirrors are small and sit on the vanity table, the dresser, or the secretary desk and provide elegance and ambiance.

For an adult woman, add in a small secretary mirror to the decor. These small mirrors are great for sitting on the vanity table, a Shabby Chic dresser or a matching secretary desk to add elegance to the room.

The next thing to consider for a shabby chic bedroom is the bed. A large ornate headboard for the bed is one popular shabby chic choice, but make sure that the bed and dresser will go together. One of the most popular items for a “shabby chic” princess themed bed is a canopy. A canopy can make a bed look luxurious and royal, and will certainly make your daughter feel like a princess indeed. If you choose a shabby chic bed and it doesn’t already have a canopy, you can make your own with tulle material and chandelier hooks. Glitter, rhinestones, or sequins can add the final touches.

The Shabby Chic dresser and nightstand is an important focal point in the room. These furniture pieces usually feature glass pulls on the handles and decorative carving for a feminine touch. A bookcase works well for the uncluttered look because it can be used to store items up out of reach. Thereby increasing organization and keeping a child’s room from getting messy. Your child’s collection of dolls, princess themed books, family pictures and awards can be placed in the shelves or on top of a Shabby Chic dresser. For a woman using the princess theme for the home office or bedroom, a secretary desk offers a pretty accent that traditional desks do not have. Their spindle skinny legs, narrow benches and minimal design, effortlessly tie in with the uncluttered look praised in Shabby Chic decorating.

Put up a fresh coat of paint in order to make the walls pop when redesigning a child’s bedroom. Many princesses’ themed rooms use a soft pink or purple to go with the fairy tale design, though an off white or soft yellow work just as well. Alternatively, you can paint the walls white and add a colorful border. Princess, crown, castle or chandelier murals can be hung on the walls. Butterfly or star wall hangings and peel and stick decals are another attractive options. For a personal touch, a large banner with a fairy tale scene and the child’s name can be hung up over the bed.

Shabby chic carpeting can be light-colored, or you can go with hardwood floors. You can also use area rugs with a floral design for accent by the bed or shabby chic dresser. Lighting is important, too, and teardrop chains or glass beating on a chandelier, desk lamp or floor lamp can provide the perfect ambiance. You can also hang fairy lights on the wall for more detail.

Shabby chic can mean that you take someone else’s old items they no longer need and use them for your own purposes, thus giving them new life. You can take a new piece of furniture in shabby chic design, then add to it with other items defined in yard sales, attics, estate sales, or flea markets. Older items can be well used, of course, but they still should have been handled with care, so purchase carefully when you decide on this course of action. Trying to use damaged items or those with missing pieces might not be salvageable and may end up costing you more money than they’re worth. Shabby chic is usually based around the color white, of course, but you can also add some dark colored pieces. Cream-colored furniture, too, goes well with your shabby chic princess’ bedroom.
