Redecorating Your Kid’s Room Using Surfboard Decorations

September 14th, 2011 by Rebecca McKeich

If you are looking for a cool and fun theme for your kid’s room and they love summer vacation at the beach or are a surfing fan, then you can’t go wrong with surf board decor. It brings life and color to the room as well a unique feel to the room, not the regular cartoon characters or Superheroes that seem to be in most kids’ rooms today.

Nothing says surf like a surfboard and you can pick up used ones for a fraction of the cost at surf shops, flea markets, and even online. With a few brackets it’s easy to turn that surfboard into a wall shelf or if you are really handy, replace the top of a desk with a surfboard. If your child is a surfer, hang their board on the wall, both as a decorative piece and as a place to store their board when not in use.

Think about the walls of the room, if you are good with a paint brush you can create a wave crashing effect. Paint the walls a nice blue and then using a brush and white paint, take big sweeping strokes to create a wave effect, they could even overlap onto the ceiling. If you are not handy with a brush, rag painting is something that can create a similar affect. Offset the wells with light airy white curtains with straight lines, nothing frilly or too fancy.

If you have some beach towels lying around, they are not only the perfect touch but can add the right amount of color. Hang these on the walls or even use one to reupholster a small chair or desk chair in your kid’s room.

Decorating the walls with their favorite surfer or just surfing and beach posters will add color and keep to the surf decor style of the room. Think about hanging some beach signs too, you can find new and vintage styles in shops and online.

Add a bit of fun with novelty items. You can find a variety of different surf and beach related items that would match the room perfectly. A surfboard print light switch plate, a surfboard shaped wall clock and a few surfboard wall hooks for their coats and hats are just a few of the very cool things out there to choose from.

And nothing pulls a room completely together like the right bedding. Today, bedding is all about design and you’ll find a variety of different choices when it comes to surfing and the beach. There will be flashy colorful ocean scenes to subtle and calming beach scenes to choose from.

Kids love summer and summer vacation, and when you think of summer you think of the beach house decorating. Even if your kid isn’t a surfer you can still transform their ordinary room into something spectacular with the right pieces of surfboard home decor that will make them feel like they are at the beach every day.

Decorators London: Interior Decorating

September 3rd, 2011 by Parker Beaven

If you’re going to get good interior decorating done, then one of the things you are going to need is good decorators, london having plenty. It doesn’t matter how good the london decorators are though, if your initial design is not good enough. They can only execute what you tell them to do, so this article is going to touch on how to create a good design.

Style

Crucially, whether you can articulate exactly what it is or not, you’re going to have to have a style in mind. If you want to be able to communicate what this is to other people then you’ll have to be able to put it in to words, but otherwise that doesn’t really matter.

One way that you can think about what a style is, is as a set of restrictions on what you can do. For example, if you are going for a traditional design, then you can’t use a lot of plastic and metal. If you’re going for a modern design, then old fashioned wood would not be appropriate. So as long as you have boundaries on what you can and can’t do, then you have a style of sorts.

How do you know which style is best for your home though? Well, that might not be the best way to think about it. A better way would probably be, what works best for you, and the other people living there? You might want to take a few cues from the property itself though, for example if it’s a modern home then a modern style would probably be the best fit.

If you decide to bypass this phase, and go straight to the design, then how are you going to decide on what is going to fit best together? Perhaps you really like an old fashioned light fixture that you find, but also a really nice modern looking coffee table. On their own, they’re good, but together they might look odd. That’s the danger of not having a style in mind.

Making The Design

You will probably notice the benefits of having decided on a style once you get to the design choices. That’s because, without a style, as mentioned, all you have to go by is what you like the best. However that can be difficult, because you can like multiple things, and you have to choose one. One way of solving that problem, then, is by asking yourself which one is going to serve the style in the more effective way, as that is what is going to work better in the room.

The design is not just about the objects and colours that you use though, it’s also about the arrangement. In this regard there is a very useful principle that you can make use of, which is that of using a focal point to deign everything around.

You’ve probably had the experience that when you enter a room, everything feels natural and ordered, like it’s in the right place. Conversely, you’ve probably also had the experience of walking in to a room and everything seems jumbled up. That’s because the first kind of room probably had a strong focal point, somewhere for your eye to rest first, and the other one didn’t so you were looking all over the place.

The Focal Point

So it’s clearly important that you have a focal point, but how do you create one? Well, you can use something that’s already in the room, like a fireplace or a window with nice view. Then you just draw the attention to it. You can do this by using colour, or through arranging the furniture in a certain way that the eye is directed towards it.

There are only a couple of simple examples of how to do it, there are plenty of subtle techniques, too many to go in to here. If you get in touch with experienced decorators, london will have a lot of them, then they should be able to help.

The Decorators

When you’re happy with your design, it’s time to get in the decorators, london based ones if you are located around the Capital. Make sure that they have plenty of experience to be sure that they will do a good job.

2011 Style Trends In Home Decoration

September 1st, 2011 by Trevis Chopra

You may be pleasantly surprised to discover that even home decorating possesses his own trend every year. Consequently for 2011, we are proud to examine some of the best home decors that will definitely wow your friends and family or perhaps even inspire you to apply some of the ideas in your own home.

Everything out of date is cutting edge again, and vintage themed rooms are definitely “in” again. It is not only widely used in weddings but in home decorating too. You can aquire brand-new upholstery for the solid old chair and recliner frames from the 1950′s, and you’ll end up right back in style. Second-hand stores and “thrift shops” are getting replaced by stylish “vintage furniture” as the places where you can get fresh ideas.

Wall decor and wall treatments are generally eternal and can often brighten up a room. These wall decors might also make the room appear welcoming and comfortable. Wall murals are one of the hottest trends in 2011, made use of in both interior and exterior applications. Look at introducing it on your walls, doors, windows and floorings. These murals can also be reused and reinstalled, so if you ever relocate to another place you can still get pleasure from them. A more extreme design could be the use of metallic paint on the ceiling which is further enhanced by a striking lighting fixture.

Then again, many people are now in search of approaches to decorate using ecologically conscious components. For anyone who is unaware of things that can make your property environment friendly, start by using LED lights and LED technology in equipment such as your home television. In kitchen supply shops a lot more items now are accessible in eco-friendly versions. Even though they look identical, they are made from materials that are formulated to biodegrade quickly. Lighting fixtures play an enormous function in creating your theme, and the latest fashion requires hanging lamps throughout the home.

Colors are another element that helps determine your theme, and many colors that were popular some time ago are making a comeback. When it comes to choosing outdoor furniture, coffee brown will be a popular shade this year, as will red. For a more traditional and vintage theme it’s possible to go with the neutral colors to generate a sophisticated effect. Due to the pressures of modern life it is no wonder that soothing tones such as aqua and avocado continue to stay in vogue.

The kitchen is considered to be the heart of a household. When planning any improvements to your kitchen, experts advise going for a open feeling. Choose the designs and kitchen components that you put in your kitchen prudently. Use recyclable materials for your counter tops and other decor to create an eco-friendly workspace.

It is in no way too late to produce a noticeable improvement to the appearance of your house, both inside and out. With the recommendations in this article you can actually get started putting many of the latest redecorating trends into your own home.

Bathroom Trends: use technology, innovation and luxury

March 16th, 2010 by jan

Bathroom trends

some cats love sinksBathroom design is a skilled art, requiring talented professionals to combine the latest trends and fashions with advanced technologies and scientific expertise. Successful designs are conceptualized through insights into the practical needs of consumers and contemporary popular culture.

With these factors in mind, it’s possible for designers to predict the direction in which future trends are going. Prominent trends for the future have been observed as avant garde design, an awareness of the environment, fashion, acute and simple versatility and technological advances.

Join the ranks of the Avant Garde – try the new and unusual

A flair for the avant garde translates into bathroom design as a touch of the eccentric and the extraordinary. This bathroom trend involves warmth and delicious softness.

Rich, ambient lighting coupled with velvet materials for carpets and curtains in dark shades create a warm feel. This contemporary style places importance on high volume fittings such as a deep freestanding bathtub with the latest fittings in modern designs. These include taps made from high quality materials such as chrome, steel and brushed nickel.

Green Living (Blue Responsibility) – Wellness, economy, eco-conscience

Bathroom readingEcologically friendly bathroom design has become the most popular choice in bathroom trends. With increasing emphasis on the need for awareness around our planet’s diminishing resources, eco-friendliness in the home has become both a trend and a lifestyle choice. In the bathroom, you don’t have to compromise your comfort or shower to be green.

Eco-friendly design is focused around efforts to sustain natural resources and conserve energy. Water conservation is important, and can be achieved through special bathroom systems which recycle waste water and purify it for other uses without damaging the environment. Recycled waste water is known as ‘grey water’ and can be used for watering the garden and for flushing the toilet.

Bathrooms that recycle grey water can save up to 50% of the water which would have been used with a normal bathroom system.

Home Bathroom Decor  – Begins with a visual statement

With the home becoming more of a social space, designer bathrooms have started to encompass specific and central pieces of focus to create a fashionable theme in their design.

Chrome bathroom fittings are minimalist and those featuring interchangeable features are a suitable component of this style. Taps and other fittings should be elegant and luxurious yet minimalistic.

Dare to be  Versatile – Yes you can be sophisticated and chic with comfort

Bathrooms which feature practicality for family use are another popular emerging trend. Large open spaces without constraints and multifunctional innovative fittings feature in the style. The design uses sophistication, functionality, class and comfort.

JCreate your own Private Spa – Relaxation and regeneration

Personal wellness, relaxation and luxury are important features in bathrooms, especially to escape from the stressful environment in which we live. A spa conjures ideas of great luxury and splendour and the private spa trend in bathroom designs encompasses a rejuvenating and calming opulence in a private and sophisticated setting.

Features of a private spa design include sensory effects such as massage functions and shower heads created to simulate rainfall for a peaceful and relaxing experience.

Go Techno – Technological advances make bathrooms sexy

Gadgets and technology add a modern element to large bathroom spaces. Luxurious and technological fixtures such as shower massagers and body jets provide a futuristic showering and bathing experience. These are complimented by the latest innovations in ultra-modern electronic equipment such as televisions and speakers, always keeping the bathroom space connected to the world and up to date on the latest events and current affairs. A technological bathroom is sophisticated and practical.

Bathrooms are not only functional, they make a statement. They begin as a blank canvas upon which stylish and functional art is created.

Bathroom designers combine different tastes, themes and trends to establish forthcoming styles of bathroom design. Quality should never be compromised and fittings such as taps and bathtubs should always be built from the finest materials and resources to ensure the longevity of a designer bathroom.

How To Design Ceiling Lighting

March 10th, 2010 by jan

In choosing your ceiling lights, there is wisdom when you spend enough time to plan out your steps with precision; otherwise, a lot of un-pretty and expensive consequences may come into the picture. Deciding which kitchen fixtures suit the mood of that particular place saves you the troubles that are common in compulsive or unplanned shopping.

First, good ceiling fixtures should provide the right amount of light needed for the room. In dining room for example, soft glow ceiling fixtures go in harmony with the dining table. The light must be sufficient in the sense that they should be friendly to the eyes, yet helpful in seeing only the important things such as utensils, food and the faces of the people. It should not be bright as to arouse self-consciousness.

Ceilings

Dt088Ceiling lights for bedroom can be recessed from the center. Some would recommend using fluorescent lights for ceiling lamps that are placed far from where the bed is located. Ceiling lamps that do not use bright lights can be placed directly above the bed.  If reading before sleeping is a hobby, having sconce light on the side of bed or having bedside table lamp makes it possible as well as enjoyable. Small recessed lights that illuminate softly can be great to lighten dark corners.

Besides ceiling height, determine the purpose of the light, if you choose a hanging light, will it be used generally to light the entire place? Or just a particular portion? What types of activities are done below the ceiling lamps?  To some people, they choose different set of lights for one room.

Choose your style

Some rooms have traditional style while others have contemporary. Choose the chandeliers or fixtures that are still beautiful even when its lights are not on. The finishing touch of the light is important as well. Does the beauty of the room enhanced more with lights that have satin finish? Brass perhaps? How about Nickel, chrome, glass, crystal or flock, to name a few?

DreamyHow much light is needed?

Now, the room itself has a lot to think and plan about. For example, its size matters. Is it too large that it needs not only one set of chandelier but fixtures or pendant as well? If the size is medium to small, you can settle with medium-sized lights as well. What other people do is to have small chandelier installed either at the center of the ceiling or exactly above the living room set, and then have additional small sconces or recessed lights to produce light to dark areas. Still some, use floor lamps and table lamps situated at the corner.

Living room must not be left behind. This is where most visitors are entertained. This is also the place where the family gathers. Recessed lighting is perfect for the ceiling lights. Fixtures or pendant lights that emit bright lights bulbs set the room cheerful and lively. If there are dark corners on this part of the house, lamps whether ceiling or wall or customized for the floor serve their purposes.

Lighting for food and ambiance

Dining room is another place that needs the right lights. Fixtures with ceiling fans are the latest trends. They can hang exactly from where the dining table is located. If there is a long and wide cabinet near the dining room, or a mini- bar, customized fixtures and recessed lights suit well with them. Select the ceiling lights that have soft glow because they are friendly to the eyes and sets the right calming mood.

Whatever place you are renovating, bear in mind that some ceiling lights or fixtures can work only with specific bulbs. So before buying anything from the store, you need to consider the availability of the bulbs in case they need replacement.

Teen’s Room: An EASY Retro Look

February 25th, 2010 by jan

A Retro Look For Your Teen’s Room

Australian Home Journal Budget Decorating September 1979 DThe 60’s were a time of tie & dye, flower power, Woodstock and peace symbols. This was the time of the hippie. Decades on, it’s evident that the hippie fad still hasn’t died down and continues to make a come back over the last few years. And it’s currently all the rage with teens all over.

Retro decor and vintage posters are back in style in a BIG way.

If your teen or tween is showing signs of that retro spirit, why not give her a room that will let her shine in all her hippie glory. decorating teen rooms can be a challenge for any parent, so take a deep breath and remember it is NOT your room ( thank goodness)

Be bold Be funky

Because the 60’s used bold colors you can also decorate using these colors. Take her walls for example, you can choose to do a block design on one wall. Create blocks and outline them with masking tape and then tape. Allow to dry before you remove the tape. When dry you should have a creative wall that is very retro. Add some personal touches to the look by painting daisies on the wall.

Use your imagination when it comes to furnishings.

Back in the 60’s the mood was happy and playful so you can create this look with blow-up chairs or bean bags. Take all the wooden furniture and paint it white. Add a disco ball to the room by taking down the old ceiling light fixture and put up a spinning disco ball. Don’t forget to purchase a lava lamp to finish the look. You can find all of these retro decorations at a discount store. You may want to add some incense on her night stand for her to light up and relax to.

A shag area rug would go great in your hippie teen’s room. This is because the 60’s were defined by the retro shag style area rugs. Get one in jewel tones or even psychedelic colors. You may even find that the color palette offered by the area rug is exactly what you need for the rest of your room. Get matching fabric or funky Posters to go on the walls.

Australian Better Homes & Gardens 1979Add vinyl and classic rock album covers on the wall. ( not valuable ones!)  This should be a variety of popular singers like Lennon and the Rolling Stones hanging on her wall.

When you are ready to decorate her cushions you want to use a tie dye look. This is an easy project that you can do at home together. Take some plain white linen and turn it into a bright bold color to add to her room.

Remember that hippies believed in freedom of expression so in order to make her happy you will need to allow her to express herself too. This will make the room look wonderful and your teen or tween will be very happy.

Keep up with current Home Decorating styles and enhance your home with a rug from the Dynamic Rugs Funky Collection.
