If you are looking for a cool and fun theme for your kid’s room and they love summer vacation at the beach or are a surfing fan, then you can’t go wrong with surf board decor. It brings life and color to the room as well a unique feel to the room, not the regular cartoon characters or Superheroes that seem to be in most kids’ rooms today.
Nothing says surf like a surfboard and you can pick up used ones for a fraction of the cost at surf shops, flea markets, and even online. With a few brackets it’s easy to turn that surfboard into a wall shelf or if you are really handy, replace the top of a desk with a surfboard. If your child is a surfer, hang their board on the wall, both as a decorative piece and as a place to store their board when not in use.
Think about the walls of the room, if you are good with a paint brush you can create a wave crashing effect. Paint the walls a nice blue and then using a brush and white paint, take big sweeping strokes to create a wave effect, they could even overlap onto the ceiling. If you are not handy with a brush, rag painting is something that can create a similar affect. Offset the wells with light airy white curtains with straight lines, nothing frilly or too fancy.
If you have some beach towels lying around, they are not only the perfect touch but can add the right amount of color. Hang these on the walls or even use one to reupholster a small chair or desk chair in your kid’s room.
Decorating the walls with their favorite surfer or just surfing and beach posters will add color and keep to the surf decor style of the room. Think about hanging some beach signs too, you can find new and vintage styles in shops and online.
Add a bit of fun with novelty items. You can find a variety of different surf and beach related items that would match the room perfectly. A surfboard print light switch plate, a surfboard shaped wall clock and a few surfboard wall hooks for their coats and hats are just a few of the very cool things out there to choose from.
And nothing pulls a room completely together like the right bedding. Today, bedding is all about design and you’ll find a variety of different choices when it comes to surfing and the beach. There will be flashy colorful ocean scenes to subtle and calming beach scenes to choose from.
Kids love summer and summer vacation, and when you think of summer you think of the beach house decorating. Even if your kid isn’t a surfer you can still transform their ordinary room into something spectacular with the right pieces of surfboard home decor that will make them feel like they are at the beach every day.

In the great manor houses of the Middle Ages, there was no dedicated dining room. Architecture of the homes of nobles was fairly predictable. The sleeping chambers usually had an adjoining parlour for receiving visitors or carrying out daily activities. The kitchen would have been large and functional, while the Great Hall would have served as a multi-function room large enough to seat the entire population of the house.
During religious or marriage celebrations the Great Hall would have been the venue for entertainment as well as dining. There would have been a great long table or two extending the length of the room, with enough long backed chairs for everyone. The family of the home always had their own raised table at the head of the Great Hall, and of course first choice of each dish as it passed down the line. For the mundane daily meals, it was common for family members to dine separately in private chambers either adjacent to the Great Hall or to their own sleeping chamber. When the Black Death made its way across Europe during the 14th century, many families took to private rooms for their meals to avoid having contact with outside people unnecessarily. Of course, it is also possible the extreme number of people who died from the plague meant there was a great lack of servants.
The trend of taking meals in private chambers continued well into the 17th century, partly out of political reasoning and partly out of fear. When King Henry VIII called for the dismantling of the Catholic monasteries and stepped away from the Vatican, it became inadvisable for all private citizens to speak freely in front of a crowd of people. Eventually, the parlour became the dining room and the Great Hall became something only used on rare occasion. During the 18th century a trend arose in which the ladies of the party would excuse themselves after the meal was consumed, and retire to a drawing room for quiet conversation. The gentlemen would undoubtedly stay in the dining room with their beverages and discuss the issues of the time. Since it was the men who seemed to take leisure there for such length, the dining room began to take on a trend of masculine design.
The practice of the ladies and gentlemen separating after the feast continued well into the 20th century, however there were changes in the size and placement of the dining room. Previously, the small chambers adjacent to the Great Hall (that became dining rooms) were positioned on a separate floor from the food preparation area. It was quite common for food to be stone cold by the time it arrived at the table. Sometime towards the end of the 19th century kitchens were moved up one floor to coincide with the dining room. There would still not have been any indication by diners that a facility of such great work was close by, but the food at least arrived when it was still warm.
As the 20th century progressed, home design changed. It became more practical, less exclusive and far more affordable. Kitchens were adjacent to dining rooms, but a new feature was added: the dinette or breakfast nook. Regular daily meals were typically served in the dinette while the dining room was reserved for special occasions. In some households the dining room was used only for Sunday dinner and family celebrations. Other homes incorporated the formal use of the room only for occasions when guests were dining in the home. Towards the end of the 20th century, home design in the middle to upper class range began to enlarge the family eating and recreation area while getting rid of the formal dining room altogether. The focus was on family time and any special meals were taken outside the home.
Today, we are seeing homes built with a functional dining room that also serves as a place for the family meal. Practicality that incorporates a contemporary design is the choice being made by home owners. In this way, the desire to fulfil the needs of the family while maintaining a keen sense of style in the home is met. Advancing technology has allowed the use of finer materials and a more customized approach to furniture and home design, more so than ever before.
It is not just the dining room that has evolved; it is the entire idea of a house as a home. It is a place for sleep, fellowship and quiet enjoyment with loved ones. The dining room has progressed from a massive multi-function space that echoed every little noise to a well designed functional yet stylish room. Homes today have the ability to accommodate the needs of the family without the cold impersonal feel of a castle, thanks to advancing design and building technology.

Did you know that many manufacturers these days will recommend that you cover your table with a decent tablecloth? One of the reasons why this is a suggestion they make is because keeping another protective layer on the table will mean that its lifespan will increase and the table will look better for that time as well.
Something that many people do is they put a thin see through plastic tablecloth on their table so that people can still see what the table looks like underneath. What you need to understand is that it doesn’t matter if you just cover the table while people are eating on it as long as the table is covered in case of a spill or something else that might damage the table. Another thing you need to understand is that some tables out there will withstand liquids much better, for instance a steel table or even a glass table will withstand liquids much better but at the same time they could still be harmful to the table itself.
If you want to make sure your table lasts as long as you want it to then you need to buy a tablecloth to ensure that this happens. Most people think that a tablecloth is only supposed to be used when you are outdoors having a picnic of some kind but that is not the total truth. Something that I would recommend is that you buy a tablecloth that looks good in your house and that fits your table perfectly.
What you will love about getting a tablecloth is that with all the different ones out there you will have no problem finding the right one to match your dining room and all the rest of your furniture. I don’t know everything about design and things like that but I know that it will make your dining room look better if everything flows with each other. Do yourself a favor and just make sure it all goes together, you will thank yourself afterwards, trust me on this one.
The last thing that you need to understand is that with all the tablecloths out there you need to pick the best one for you because there are some that are supposed to be used outdoors and some indoors. The reason I mention this is because I don’t want you buying the wrong one and then blaming me for it. When it comes to getting the right tablecloth just know that you don’t have to spend lots of money because you can also find tablecloths cheap.
When it comes to buying tablecloths you need to understand that you must buy them online. Most people think that a tablecloth is a tablecloth but the truth is that all tablecloths are different.

India has been well-known for its hand block printing craft since the 12th century and the creative process flourished as the hand block print textile received royal patronage. This traditional craft is passed down through the generations of artisan communities using hand crafted blocks, natural dyes and classic motifs. This hereditary art is handed down from one generation to the next using hand crafted blocks, natural dyes and classic motifs. Ahmedabad, Sanganer, Bagru, Farukhabad and Pethapur, are the main centers in Rajasthan and Gujarat where hand block printing has continued to flourish.
How Hand Block is made
The preparation of the cloth is the first crucial step using natural ingredients like cow dung, sesame oil and soda ash mixed with water to soak the cloth overnight. The cloth is then dried along the riverbank for an entire day. The bleaching process is repeated everyday for a week. This time consuming and exhausting process allows for the fibres in the cotton to expand increasing its ability to absorb a bigger amount of colour during the dyeing process.
A black outline is stamped on the cloth using a carved wooden block. Next, a red dye is applied with an infill block to areas of the design where red is desired. More colours are printed to the cloth until the design is finished. The last stage is removing the gum on the cloth by cleaning it meticulously on the riverbank.
This traditional craft is at risk of becoming extinct with quicker and more modern methods of printing becoming more and more popular. The community of hand block printers are steadily decreasing with the popularity of modern printing methods. The pressure to compete in the modern world is taking its toll. The traditions seeped in this ancient craft gives the cloth an individual beauty that is missing in the modern and quicker printing methods. The survival of this craft depends on the support of these artisans and their special craft for them to continue the transfer of knowledge to the next generation.
The beautiful designs and motifs of this craft continue to be featured in contemporary fashion and home furnishings. One such company that celebrates the time-honoured tradition of the handmade is Darjeeling Cotton.
