The art of Hand Block Prints

August 21st, 2011 by Charlotte Bedall

India has been well-known for its hand block printing craft since the 12th century and the creative process flourished as the hand block print textile received royal patronage. This traditional craft is passed down through the generations of artisan communities using hand crafted blocks, natural dyes and classic motifs. This hereditary art is handed down from one generation to the next using hand crafted blocks, natural dyes and classic motifs. Ahmedabad, Sanganer, Bagru, Farukhabad and Pethapur, are the main centers in Rajasthan and Gujarat where hand block printing has continued to flourish.

How Hand Block is made

The preparation of the cloth is the first crucial step using natural ingredients like cow dung, sesame oil and soda ash mixed with water to soak the cloth overnight. The cloth is then dried along the riverbank for an entire day. The bleaching process is repeated everyday for a week. This time consuming and exhausting process allows for the fibres in the cotton to expand increasing its ability to absorb a bigger amount of colour during the dyeing process.

A black outline is stamped on the cloth using a carved wooden block. Next, a red dye is applied with an infill block to areas of the design where red is desired. More colours are printed to the cloth until the design is finished. The last stage is removing the gum on the cloth by cleaning it meticulously on the riverbank.

This traditional craft is at risk of becoming extinct with quicker and more modern methods of printing becoming more and more popular. The community of hand block printers are steadily decreasing with the popularity of modern printing methods. The pressure to compete in the modern world is taking its toll. The traditions seeped in this ancient craft gives the cloth an individual beauty that is missing in the modern and quicker printing methods. The survival of this craft depends on the support of these artisans and their special craft for them to continue the transfer of knowledge to the next generation.

The beautiful designs and motifs of this craft continue to be featured in contemporary fashion and home furnishings. One such company that celebrates the time-honoured tradition of the handmade is Darjeeling Cotton. There comes a point within any home where decorating and new furniture are a must.

July 14th, 2011 by Callum T Simpson

An opportunity for change and to stamp down your personality and create an environment which you can really enjoy spending time in. When applying this to the bedroom, the result will hopefully be a serene and calm surrounding in which to spend a peaceful night and gain some decent sleep. [link]

Once the paint brushes have been put away, dust sheets moved and everything inside the room is dry, furniture and accessories will help to shape the room further. Whilst old bedroom furniture can be spruced up to look the part, there is nothing like new furniture to compliment fresh dcor. Bedroom furniture can be purchased as a set which keeps the style ongoing and costs down.

A new bed offers the ideal finish in any bedroom and coupled with some fresh bedding and scatter cushions, adds a modern, traditional or contemporary touch to any living space. Of course any bed needs to be inviting and comfortable in order to encourage rest and relaxation.

Gaining popularity over recent years, leather beds are an asset, offering luxury in any bedroom. Colours vary from brown, black and white and sold in varying sizes to suit. The ‘Sleepynight Caprice Leather TV Bed’ is an alternative to a standard leather bed, boasting enough space to hold a 19 inch television in the foot. The faux leather bed provides a modern look but can be added to a traditional style bedroom given the right accessories.

In contrast to the leather bed is the wooden bed frame. Again, colours vary, from light wood to dark wood, black or white, with further options for children. Metal bed frames and divan beds are also available, dependant upon taste and needs and start at a small single, which is 2 ft 6”, increasing to a super kingsize of 6 ft.

If buying a bed to compliment a spare room, then guest beds are ideal. They are sold in singles and doubles and have the added advantage of a further bed which pulls out from underneath meaning an extra guest can enjoy the comfort. Also popular are sofa beds which can be placed either in a bedroom or a living room.

Children’s beds have the chance to be fun. Bunk beds are always a winner, giving the child choice of where they wish to sleep, either high up or low down. They are perfect for children sharing a bedroom and make fantastic space savers. Also good on space are cabin beds which hold storage space underneath the bed.

From 489, the cheapest price on the internet, an adjustable bed can be bought which is ideal for alleviating aches and pains from certain conditions. By moving the top part of the bed, the optimum position can be gained for back pain sufferers, ensuring a good nights sleep. The lower part of the bed can also adjust for feet and leg elevation.

Shopping online for the perfect bed is the easiest way to find the best deal. It does not have to be an expensive purchase and if sourced correctly from a reputable company, will last for many years to come.

Decorative Wall Art Perfect Displays To Your Dull And Lifeless Walls

September 30th, 2010 by jan

Walls are like blank canvass in any home. You can easily design it however it suits your fancy. The colors and the decorations that you put on it can almost distinguish a boring from a lively home. This is perhaps why if you look around home accessory shops, there are about 1001 accessories and displays that are meant to beautify your walls – paintings, large picture frames and decorative wall art are but to name a few.

Among the wall accents mentioned, decorative wall art that are made of wrought iron automatically stands out. This is because their intricate designs, different textures and interesting colors can give life to any dull and empty wall. In addition, they are versatile enough to earn them a place in any part of the house.

Think of a wrought iron wall grille for example, since its design is mostly composed of classical patterns, you can either display them in the living room, dining area and even the bedroom if the homeowner likes. This is so much different compared to the painting of the Last Supper. Sure, the painting is absolutely beautiful and religiously significant but it can look out of place when put in the receiving area or the bedroom for example.

Apart from that, there are simply a lot of decorative wall art pieces that you can choose from in the market. Here are a few of the examples:

1. Three – Piece Wall Art
These pieces are usually smaller compared to other traditional home accents and they are meant to be hung in a group. Their designs are usually embossed from a plaque and they bear the most interesting combinations of colors like red, gold and brown that border more on the metallic side.

They are ideal to be displayed on a medium sized wall.

2. Metal Wall Grilles
The wall grilles are perfect for people who love the renaissance era. The patterns and the designs they bear are mostly limited to classical designs such as the fleur – de – lis, leaves, vines, flowers and even some Celtic inspired patterns.

In terms of size, the larger metal wall grilles can span in 3 to 4 feet in height and width. As such, they are meant to be displayed alone in one wall.

3. Metal Wall Frames
These decorative pieces can either come in singles or in groups. They are perfect to display your happy memories with your family, your portraits and the large one can even display the certificates or awards that you are most proud of.

Although they can be put relatively anywhere, these pieces are best hung on the walls adjacent to stairs or bedroom doors where they can be appreciated.

4. Decorative Lighting Pieces
Some examples of these are candle sconces, bigger candle holders and wall mounted lanterns. These pieces are not only beautiful to look at but when adorned with lighted candles, they can provide the most interesting focal points in your home.

Where can you put them? They can be hung on hallways and dark corners of your home.

Wallpaper Trends for the Stylish and Chic

September 16th, 2010 by jan

Trends in home designs come and go, and wallpaper is no different. Wallpaper has ridden the waves of popularity over the years and recently there has been a rising interest with an offering of new, rich designs and interesting textures. Whether you just want to make your new home unique, or are preparing your house to put on the market, deciding to wallpaper the interior can provide great visual interest to potential buyer and visitors.

You may not be impressed at the thought of covering your walls once again with wallpaper, especially if you think back to some of the designs that were produced back in the 60 and 70’s. Although some of the new designs have a distinctly retro feel there are plenty of other choices, anything from Victorian to geometrical, vinyls to fabrics, and small repeats to entire murals. As with all decorating elements there is something to fit in with all kinds of taste and budget range.

When setting out to wallpaper your home, consider what style of design would look best in the room to be decorated. Has the house itself, or the room alone, have its own style, and how about the furniture and décor? If your furniture is modern you may not want to invest in a traditional floral paper design, or if the room has a lot of visuals to catch the eye already, then you may want to try papering only one focal wall to keep it from looking too cluttered.

For those who prefer a monochromatic look, consider a paintable wall covering. The texture in the paper does wonders to cover damaged walls and bumps that would normally show through a flat paper and you can paint it to match your decor. Patterns in paintable wall coverings range from Victorian to stucco to modern geometrics, giving you a wide variety of effects to choose from.

Hanging wallpaper to fit an oddly shaped space can be a hassle, if this is the case, there are some interesting products available in pre-cut modular paper that you tile on your walls, mixing and matching colours as you please. Or tearable papers in stone and marble textures, these can also be used to cover panelling and counter tops. This can also work if you just want something a little more unusual for a great effect.

If you have a little extra money to invest into your wall covering project, consider the possibilities of some of the more unusual options. Some designer wall coverings are being produced in a wild array of materials and textures like fake fur, glass beaded paper, woven fibre, stitched paper, and others. Imagine the reaction you will get from visitors to your house as they view wallpaper that is really remarkable.

Always take into account that before you start to paint or paper your walls it is essential to make sure that you clean and prep them as appropriate to get the best results. If you’re unsure about wallpapering or are investing in an expensive designer paper, then perhaps you should consider hiring a professional to hang the wallpaper for you.

Applying wallpaper as a feature in your home can really transform the room and give it a unique, stylish appearance. If you want to hang the paper yourself then it is quite easy to lean how to hang it correctly, however if you don’t pay attention to the guidelines provided with the paper then it could all go wrong. Badly hung wallpaper is obvious and you need to have patience and persistence to get it to look as it should. This is particularly important when you are hanging wallpaper with design and patterns as any tiny mismatch then becomes obvious, and you would have to remove it and start all over again.

There is plenty of professional help out there if you are not confident to hang the paper yourself. Check online for advice and information, also all the latest designs can be found online and you’ll be amazed at the amount of choice there is available.
