I went to see Niki in the Garden -Niki de Saint Phalle Sculpture Exhibit at the Atlanta Botanical Garden- last year  and that was an amazing experience!!!
I actually went twice! First with my friends and then I took my mom. It was as amazing the second time as the first!
I remembered it again his weekend when I saw some pictures of hers and I wanted to share it with you.

I found this poem today and I really like it!!!

ITHACA

As you set out for Ithaca
hope that your journey is a long one,
full of adventure, full of discovery.

Laistrygonians and Cyclops,
angry Poseidon - do not be afraid of them:
you’ll never find things like that on your way
as long as you keep your thoughts raised high,
as long as a rare sensation
touches your spirit and your body.

unless you bring them along inside your soul,

These are two of the elements that are found in Japanese Geishas who are portrayed in art. Therefore, Geisha art is something that is a balance of beauty and power. Also, Geishas are extremely well versed in tradition, so the Japanese women in art who are portrayed as Geisha are also carriers of the traditions that all Japanese wish to keep.

Therefore, using Geisha art in your home can bring in all of these ideas – traditions, power, and beauty. Any room in your home can be built around these ideas already, and the women found in the paintings will simply enhance this for you.

One of the reasons I personally love this series, is because it takes Japanese art in a totally different direction than we normally think of.
It’s not just the Geisha’s and fan pedals. It’s full of motion and color, it’s all these images crowded onto the page but in a really pleasing way. It almost looks like a tapestry.
One of my favorite things is the use of line. The Japanese have an incredible us of line and expression when they create these water colors.
In the way that the people are moving through the picture really indicates the flexibility.

Looking at this print you can see these acrobats flying to the air and doing flips, it makes you want to engage with these group of people. I love the fact that you can see colorful outfits and really get a feeling of what it’s like to be in an Oriental Three Ring Circle.

When finding an art print for an hard to decorate room like a long hall or bathroom, be sure and look at the style and the scale of the image that is in the art print. If you have a room that you would like to liven up, try something that has big imagery perhaps an abstract with lots of color and brush strokes or texture.

If you have some area that you would like to make more intimate, try using images that might be smaller and more detailed like print reproduction of an antique advertising poster. Using the scale of the images in the art print is a very effective tool in creating the effect that you want in the room that you are decorating.

In order to feel really creative, most of the time it involves being quiet. Ironically being quiet can lead to a lot of feelings that are less than creative, but if you stick with it, are you sure you’ll find your spirit talking with you. Vintage Ad Posters Taking The Place Of Paintings As Wall Art

Vintage advertising posters have been seen on walls where fine art used to hang.
This is quite a turn for posters churned out on newsprint to last a few colorful weeks on a wall or Paris kiosk to promote an event or product. As the first modern mass advertising medium, which had its heyday from the 1880s through the 1950s, the ones that survived are striking, with strong graphics aimed at delivering a punch to passers-by.

“The great thing about posters is that they are accidental art,” said Nicholas Lowry, president of Swann Galleries. “They’re not made to be saved. It’s meant to be advertising, to be rained on, torn down or plastered over. That’s the beauty of it.”
“It’s beautiful graphic design and social history at the same time,” added Gail Chisholm, who runs Chisholm Gallery in New York. “Prices have gone up enough that I should have just stayed a collector.”
It’s the uncommon advertising posters from Art Nouveau (1890-1914) and Art Deco (1925-1940s) periods that have made huge leaps in worth over the last 10 years.

The highest price ever paid for a vintage poster was $250,000 designed by French artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. The poster sold at Poster Auction in New York in 1999.
Lautrec’s painting, “L’Abandon ou les deux amies,” sold for $8.5 million. Artists like him also produced fine lithographic prints in limited editions for the art market.

“The artistic talent expressed in his prints is the same as that expressed in his poster design work. So posters are a relative bargain,” said Louis Bixenman, director of the International Vintage Poster Fair in New York.

Collectors usually specialize in categories including Art Nouveau, with its writhing plant forms and maidens with flowing hair; and Art Deco, with stylish, geometric graphics.
We have reproductions of early 20th century posters by Leonetto Cappiello, whose work advertised Campari, Cinzano and other products. We also have reproductions of posters by Jules Cheret,. His original posters cost $8,000 to $10,000.

Movie posters are a separate class, with even higher record prices fueled by the fan base of a celebrity rather than the art design itself.

While the originals can be found -although at high prices- the reproductions are taking over more of the market for the everyday person. They love the image, the vibrant colors, the scenery the message that the posters give, they don’t care if it is an original or not!

Here is where the reproductions come in for all of us who can’t afford the “real deal” and are more interested in the art and the look then the antique value. You can call it cheap wall art or fine art posters, reproductions are making its way into more and more peoples homes as an affordable and easy way of decorating.
